The functioning of Tail Mill once depended on efficient water control of which these sluice gates and mechanisms were an integral part. The gates, set in still-surviving oak pillars, were raised via the cast iron rack and pinions, no doubt plastered in tallow to aid the process. Now, with the demise of the mill as an industrial site, the future of these wonderful examples of Victorian engineering hangs in the balance. What will become of them?
