An introduction by
Cathy Herriman, Group Chairman

Merriott Local History Group came into being as an initiative of two volunteer members of the Village Plan Committee, Mary Paull and myself.

Mary is descended from a long line of Merriott people, with an especial interest in the last century. I'm just an upstart American, with an interest in social and medieval history. But in researching  Merriott's history, I'm now fascinated by the social changes which took place here in late Victorian times.

The Village Plan has been a great success, but there were a few dark and gloomy days when we wondered about funding etc or we were  generally knocking heads together, as one does on these committees. It was then that Mary and I would nod and say to each other: 'But at the very least, we will start a local history group'.

So, with initial seed corn money from the Village Plan Committee, Merriott Local History Group was formed. It is now in its fourth year, with much support from a great team of like-minded people.

We are not a 'club' as such as we have no formal membership . Instead, the committee organise talks, the occasional trip or special event. For example, our 'Finds Day' a couple of years ago, was a true village event and a great success. In addition, this website now gives us the chance to publish some of what we've heard about or discovered and for anyone, wherever you live, to share photos, memories and research.

Meetings are held in the Tithe Barn during the winter on the third Wednesday of the month, and are open to everyone. You can find information about this season’s meetings on the Home page. The entry fee is £2, but expect to buy raffle tickets! Wine is available on donation. We are a convivial crowd and good conversation may be had at the 'bar'. Whether you are a long-time resident or new to the village, please come and join us.

If you have any special interests, queries, or suggestions in which you think we'd be interested, please contact me.
